How Starter Motors Work
When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component sends the charge to the vehicle’s battery, then into the starter motor. The electrical current activates the starter motor and engages the starter drive (Bendix gear system) with the vehicle’s flywheel.
As the starter motor turns, it cranks the engine to initiate the combustion process. Once the engine is running, the connection between the starter motor and flywheel disengages automatically as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark to maintain operation.
