Starter Motor Operation
When the engine is activated (via stop/start button or key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid, which relays the charge from the battery to the starter motor. This activates the starter motor and engages the starter drive (Bendix gear system) with the vehicle’s flywheel.
As the starter motor turns, it cranks the engine to initiate combustion in petrol and diesel vehicles. Once the engine is running, the mechanism disengages the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as the engine no longer requires the electrical spark.
