How Does a Starter Motor Work?
When the engine is started (via stop/start button or traditional key), an electrical signal is sent to the starter solenoid. This component sends the charge from the vehicle’s battery to the starter motor.
The electrical current activates the starter motor and the starter drive (Bendix gear system), which engages the vehicle’s flywheel. As the starter motor turns, it cranks the engine to initiate the combustion process.
Once the engine is running, the mechanism disconnects the starter motor from the gear and flywheel as the engine no longer needs the electrical spark to operate.
